Catholic Schools Week is the week of January 29th through February 4th.  It is a time set aside across the nation to celebrate and appreciate all Catholic schools and what we have to offer our families.  There are a number of activities scheduled for the students and staff during that week.

On Wednesday evening, February 1st we will be hosting our prospective sixth graders and their parents at our annual Parent Information Night at JCMS.  Invitations were sent to all the parents of the students in sixth grade in our parish schools and religious education programs.  It is an evening designed to welcome newcomers, but also to showcase our school to others who might be interested in attending JCMS next year.  If you know of any families who you think might be interested in attending our school, please call the JCMS office and we will be glad to contact them.

One of the best things we are able to do as a Catholic school community is to celebrate Mass once a week in St. John Church.  That does mean the teachers and the students will be walking to the church on Wednesday mornings for the 9:00 Mass. Please emphasize to your child the importance of dressing properly during these cold months.  Many students come to school without hats, gloves or even proper coats.  Besides waiting outside until 8:00 a.m., the students go out during lunch, and wait outside for the ride home at the end of the day.  On days of severe cold and snow, we do open the doors earlier in the morning and keep the students in during lunch.

The week of February 6th we begin two weeks of Testing for our Eighth graders.  We will be administering the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills and the Cognitive Abilities Test during the Core class periods during those two weeks.  If at all possible, the students should be here in school to take the tests during the assigned times.  If it is possible to schedule appointments at other times during these two weeks, it would be greatly appreciated.

God bless,

Tony Shaughnessy
